THE TOWER OF BEBEL

I am Isabella. Everyone who loves me calls me Bebel, though. This is where I rant about languages and communication from the point of view of a self-taught polyglot, linguistics enthusiast, and literature-fascinated human being.
We will talk about languages from a lot of different perspectives: their origins, how they changed, what we did with them throughout time, and everyone is welcome to join the discussion. There is really no intent to make this an academic space, so I will share my stories and my own writings, and you all are welcome to do the same if you feel called to. It’s all purely for the fun of learning together how to see the beauty of our experiences through this fundamental tool.
The name “Tower of Bebel” comes from a great joke made by a person I hold very dearly in my heart. And it just fits perfectly with this purpose, since what I am aiming to do here is basically to demolish what we understand of languages and communication, look lovingly at the debris, and put it together again, but now with our own hands.
It is very important that it is understood that this space holds no real attachment to regular academic studies. I have been a part of Academia for a long time, and the decision to leave it behind — almost 5 years ago — was incredibly intentional, and this should be considered especially when I go into the actual Linguistics theories that shaped my way of reading the world. I am always speaking from a place of passion, which is what makes sense to me, and I have no intention of writing academic papers that not even an advisor will read. I am a teacher, though, so if something sounds weird or just incomprehensible, you are free to ask about it, and there will be no judgement. If you are an academic, remember that more than one thing can be true at the same time, and that this is a place for the common people — us, you included — to find joy again in thinking about and using languages. Nobody who’s working a 9–5 really cares about whether Chomsky was right.
If you're interested, come join me on this journey. Language is the main tool of our humanity, and more than understanding it, it is our right to see the beauty in it. You ready?

that is a good presentation, mann
